BMW have announced that their recently launched i8 plug-in electric car will go on sale in Ireland in July 2014 priced at €136,430. The i8 is a 4 seater Plug-in Hybrid and the next step in the evolution of BMW’s efficient dynamics. Its innovative plug in hybrid  combines the electric drive system from BMW’s i3 concept- fitted over its front axle- with a high performance three-cylinder engine producing 164kw/220hp and 300Nm (221Ib-ft) at the rear. When operating in tandem they produce the performance of a sports car while having the fuel economy of a small car.

Acceleration from 0-100kmh (62mph) is under 5 seconds, combined with fuel consumption of under 3 litres per 100km (approx. 94mpg). These figures are currently beyond the capacity of any vehicle powered by a combustion engine of comparable performance.

Using e-Drive technology, its large lithium-ion battery can be charged from a domestic power supply. The BMW i8 can travel up to 35 kilometres (approx. 20miles) on electric power alone and has been tested giving in excess of 90mpg combined.  As the i8 is designed as a plug in Hybrid for electric and combustion engine propulsion, it carries fewer batteries than the BMW i3 concept.BMW i8

The first vehicles are expected to roll off the production line in 2013.

Under the current motor tax reliefs, the BMW i8 will qualify for a VRT relief of €2,500 and an SEAI grant of €5,000
